Antique Bronze Fox-Hunting Vase with Hounds – Sculptural Figural Relief
A striking and finely modelled bronze vase, richly decorated in high relief with a continuous fox-hunting scene. The body is encircled by two groups: lively hounds and foxes, set among foliage and rural detail, with exceptional depth and movement to the modelling. The design is close to some nineteenth century Staffordshire moulded jugs the designs for which derived from the same source in graphic art.
The vase is surmounted by two upright foxes forming the handles, each standing alert and grasping the rim, giving the piece a dramatic and highly sculptural silhouette. The interior rim is organically shaped, complementing the naturalistic theme.
The base shows concentric turning marks within a milled ring, consistent with late 19th-century or early 20th-century bronze decorative wares. The surface has a deep, dark patina with areas of natural wear and rubbing, particularly to raised points, consistent with age and handling.
